Joanie Caskey is the great-great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin Terry, who was one of Sugar Land's early settlers in the 1800s and is well known for naming the City of Sugar Land after his sugar plantation. In 1852, he purchased the Oakland Plantation, a cotton, corn and sugar cane growing enterprise, and renamed it Sugar Land. Years later the plantation became Imperial Sugar Company, which is still the oldest extant business in Texas and formed when Texas was a republic. This business brought great prosperity to the coastal plains of southeast Texas with a company town that evolved into the bustling city and suburb of Houston that Sugar Land is today. With a population of well over 83,000 people in Fort Bend County, one of the most ethnically diverse and fastest growing counties in the U.S., Sugar Land is the hub of Joanie Caskey's flourishing real estate company.
